According to a Variety report from the middle of February, New York actress and comedian Nora Lum, better known by her stage name Awkwafina, will play Cheung Yin Sun in a film based on an article written by Michael Kaplan for Cigar Aficionado. The article featured in the January/February 2017 issue of this well-known magazine focused on Sun and poker player Phil Ivey’s exploits in the game of baccarat. At the start of the decade, the pair would use an unethical strategy known as edge-sorting to win millions of dollars while playing Asia’s most popular table game at multiple casinos in the US and the UK. If you are unfamiliar with this popular form of gambling, you can learn more about it by using an online baccarat live dealer.
The casino rampage committed by Ivey and Sun caused quite a stir in the gambling industry, and it received a lot of attention as the legal proceedings to determine whether or not their actions were legal were carried out. The filming of the story about these two casino con artists, titled The Baccarat Machine, is set to begin either near the end of this year or at the beginning of 2022.
In what ways are we acquainted with the play?
SK Global is the result of the merger of Ivanhoe Pictures and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment. They are the production company in charge of this endeavor. Fast Company named them one of the most innovative brands in 2020, and they currently have operations in New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Seoul. They have a track record of dozens of successful projects, including “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Hell or High Water,” “In the Bedroom,” “Money Ball,” and “Palmer,” among many others.
Jeffery Sharp of Sharp Independent Pictures, the producer of The Night Listener, A Home at the End of the World, and Boys Don’t Cry, will oversee this project. Andy Bellin will be in charge of writing the script for this project. Although many moviegoers are unfamiliar with Bellin’s name, she wrote the films Trust (2010) starring Clive Owen and Lovelace (2013) starring Amanda Seyfried as legendary pornographic actress Linda Lovelace. Clive Owen starred in Trust. Amanda Seyfried starred in Lovelace. As of the time of writing, the Baccarat Machine does not have a director attached to it.
As previously stated, Awkwafina will portray Cheung Yin Sun. She made her film debut in 2016 with the role of Christine in Neighbors 2, the sequel to the critically acclaimed comedy starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron. Her breakthrough came in 2018, when she appeared in the SK Global-produced films “Dude,” “Ocean’s Eight,” and “Crazy Rich Asians.” A year later, she won the Golden Globe for best actress in a musical or comedy for her role in the Chinese/American production of The Farewell, which earned her the award for best actress in a musical or comedy. According to a press release, by John Penotti, co-CEO of SK Global, “Awkwafina is uniquely equipped to bring Sun to life onscreen, infusing the role with humanity and genuine humor.”
There is no information available about who will co-star in the project, and there are no rumors about potential candidates to play Phil Ivey.

What does the term “Edge-Sorting” mean?
Cheung Yin Sun and Phill Ivey won a total of $9.6 million at the Borgata casino in Atlantic City’s baccarat tables in 2012. They achieved this goal by using a technique known as edge-sorting. It entails calculating the worth of a deck of cards by examining the minute differences in the shapes of the cards. Card manufacturers will inadvertently produce decks with irregularities along the edges that are nearly impossible to distinguish. The backs of the cards are identical, but the two longest edges on each one are distinct. If a player pays close attention to the cards currently in play, they may be able to identify cards with the same value. To be successful with this method, you must have an eye for detail, as even minor asymmetrical variations can be used to your advantage when attempting to identify playing cards.
Although this couple did not commit fraud by edge-sorting, United States District Judge Noel Hillman determined that they did breach their contract with the casino. Hillman concluded that Sun and Ivey violated the regulations outlined in the New Jersey Casino Controls Act. It is against the rules to play with marked cards. They did not, of course, mark the cards themselves, but rather took advantage of minor flaws that were already present.
Ivey was unsuccessful in obtaining favorable rulings in two similar cases brought before UK courts. This means that the courts in the United Kingdom refused to let him keep the money he won playing baccarat.
The Beginning of Cheung Yin Sun’s Professional Poker Career
Awkwafina’s character, Cheung Yin Sun, is inspired by the real-life Cheung Yin Sun, who was the daughter of a Hong Kong manufacturing owner and attended the Sorbonne to study fashion and French. Awkwafina will play the real-life Cheung Yin Sun in the film. She did, however, have an early penchant for games of chance; when she was fifteen, she used a phony identification to join gambling cruises in Hong Kong. This demonstrated her early fondness for this kind of game. In 2007, Sun was detained at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for not having paid an outstanding bill. After acting as a guarantor for a friend who failed to pay a marker in the amount of $100,000, Sun was taken into custody.
After being released from prison, Sun devoted the next four years of his life to gaining the ability to identify asymmetrical discrepancies in playing cards. Phil Ivey was the one who learned about her plot from her ex-boyfriend, who also introduced the two of them to one another. Because of how well they got along with one another, they concluded that they should form a partnership that would net them $30 million. On the other hand, they were not allowed to keep the vast bulk of the money for several different reasons relating to the law.
