According to a Variety report from the middle of February, New York actress and comedian Nora Lum, better known by her stage name Awkwafina, will play Cheung Yin Sun in a film based on an article written by Michael Kaplan for Cigar Aficionado. The article featured in the January/February 2017 issue of this well-known magazine focused on Sun and poker player Phil Ivey’s exploits in the game of baccarat. At the start of the decade, the pair would use an unethical strategy known as edge-sorting to win millions of dollars while playing Asia’s most popular table game at multiple casinos in the US and the UK. The casino rampage committed by Ivey and Sun caused quite a stir in the gambling industry, and it received a lot of attention as the legal proceedings to determine whether or not their actions were legal were carried out. Andy Bellin will be in charge of writing the script for this project. Although many moviegoers are unfamiliar with Bellin’s name, she wrote the films Trust (2010) starring Clive Owen and Lovelace (2013) starring Amanda Seyfried as legendary pornographic actress Linda Lovelace. Clive Owen starred in Trust. Amanda Seyfried starred in Lovelace. As of the time of writing, the Baccarat Machine does not have a director attached to it.

As previously stated, Awkwafina will portray Cheung Yin Sun. She made her film debut in 2016 with the role of Christine in Neighbors 2, the sequel to the critically acclaimed comedy starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron. Her breakthrough came in 2018, when she appeared in the SK Global-produced films “Dude,” “Ocean’s Eight,” and “Crazy Rich Asians.” A year later, she won the Golden Globe for best actress in a musical or comedy for her role in the Chinese/American production of The Farewell, which earned her the award for best actress in a musical or comedy. According to a press release, by John Penotti, co-CEO of SK Global, “Awkwafina is uniquely equipped to bring Sun to life onscreen, infusing the role with humanity and genuine humor.”

There is no information available about who will co-star in the project, and there are no rumors about potential candidates to play Phil Ivey.

What does the term “Edge-Sorting” mean?

Cheung Yin Sun and Phill Ivey won a total of $9.6 million at the Borgata casino in Atlantic City’s baccarat tables in 2012. They achieved this goal by using a technique known as edge-sorting. Awkwafina’s character, Cheung Yin Sun, is inspired by the real-life Cheung Yin Sun, who was the daughter of a Hong Kong manufacturing owner and attended the Sorbonne to study fashion and French. Awkwafina will play the real-life Cheung Yin Sun in the film. She did, however, have an early penchant for games of chance; when she was fifteen, she used a phony identification to join gambling cruises in Hong Kong.
