Did you know?...
The thickness of silk filament is expressed in terms of denier - the number of grams of weight per 9000 metres. Spun silk is given a numerical designation based on the number of hanks (840 yd. lengths) per pound.

Mommé (pronounced "mummy") refers to silk weight. The higher the mommé, the heavier the weight. Silk filaments are so fine, there are literally 1000s of threads per square inch. Often five to eight filaments are twisted together to make silk threads thicker and stronger. So, using a weight measurement is far more accurate than measuring by thread count.
