Important
word about laundering organic cotton products: WATCH YOUR
DETERGENT!
Your organic cotton (not wool-fill) natural bedding
and baby clothing are machine washable in warm water, and can be tumbled
dry low.
But be aware that the biggest selling detergents in the United States
contain large amounts of irritating phosphates, which will cling to
organic cotton bedding and baby clothing. Phosphates are not only
a major irritant to the skin and respiratory system, but a source of
serious pollution, and a component in global warming.
Large detergent manufacturers take care of themselves. If
you are wondering if your laundry detergent contains phosphates, just
read the label; it is listed there. In most industrialized
countries phosphate detergents are outlawed for good reason, but in the
United States the chemical industry has a strong lobby, and cheap
phosphates help manufacturers keep their costs low, so their use
continues. Next time you walk through the laundry detergent
section of your store, take a deep breath and notice how much the smell
irritates your nose and lungs.
Organic cotton products, and organic bedding, will never
irritate skin and respiratory systems, but residual laundry chemicals in the
fibers, will. While asthma, allergies, and skin
rashes certainly are not caused by one single chemical irritant,
removing phosphates eliminates one insidious irritant from the equation,
that can negate the positive health benefits of organic cotton and
organic bedding products.
There are several brands of phosphate-free natural detergents
available at your local store. Or visit our Organic
