About Organic Wool
Organic wool fiber fill provides the most comfortable, and the healthiest organic bedding micro climate for the resting human body.Organic wool is also one of the most versatile and healthy choices for bedding. It is sensitive to your body's temperature - keeping you warm in winter and comfortable in summer. In fact, Bedouins in the Sahara Desert have always worn wool to keep their bodies dry and comfortable.! The benefits of wool fiberfill and batting have been confirmed in studies conducted in Europe. Studies found that a sleeper's heart rate (100% of the time) and humidity next to the skin (71%) is lower under a wool comforter versus a down or synthetic filled comforter. This "natural climate zone" effect is especially advantageous in bed pillows. Large quantities of body moisture are produced in the head area. The moisture and pressure of the head are concentrated in a relatively small area, with head weight and movement tending to force moisture down into the pillow filling. The springy, resilient wool fiber batting structures contain an abundance of air. This fiber/air combination acts to cushion the body and prevent the formation of annoying and often painful pressure points.
Organic wool is almost entirely non-allergenic. Although some people do have a rare natural allergy to Lanolin (the oil found in wool), most allergic reactions to wool are caused by the many harsh, and toxic chemicals that go into treatment, and finishing, of conventional wool garments and bedding. Serious chemical abrasives are routinely used to wash raw wool for processing. Chlorine and mothproofing chemicals are routinely applied to conventional wool before turning it into finished product. Organic wool keeps your skin comfortably drier.
Humidity next to the skin above 91°, which is considered to be the optimum level for sleep comfort, was significantly higher under synthetic filled comforters 80% of the time. Results from another study at the Hohenstein Research Institute in Germany showed similar results. The findings illustrate that it is not just construction of wool fill comforters that make the best sleeping fibers, but that there is inherent benefit offered by the wool fiber itself. Wool used in natural bedding is grown, washed and processed without these chemicals; and therefore, in a much more natural state, will rarely cause allergies. Organic wool is flame resistant.
The Pure Grow Wool program emphasizes responsible land management practices, including pasture rotation and erosion control. Also, following the once-a-year event of sheep shearing, the wool is laid out on a skirting table and carefully inspected for length, strength, dirt, and pests. Wool lasts longer, and is more resistant to environmental degradation than most any other natural fiber on the planet. Even when soaking in water, wool retains its warmth and resilience (springiness). Over time, organic wool batting will compress, but it does so less than other natural fibers, including feathers and down. Organic bedding with wool fill can be freshened significantly, simply with monthly exposure to abundant fresh air, and brief (less than 30 minutes') natural sunlight. Wool is completely recyclable. Organic wool fill in natural beddings can be re-carded and restored by the manufacturer. Or, wool batting can be reworked into environmentally safe, new products. This is why there are strict mattress label laws aimed at keeping used wool out of new products. Don't understand that? Neither do we. Purchasing organic cotton bedding and organic wool products helps support small farmers Wool and milk from free-grazing sheep, treated ethically throughout their long lives, represents a traditional small-scale industry that once thrived in North America. Today, many small organic farmers are struggling to re-ignite this sustainable industry to create a clean, healthy, natural wool that is produced without stress to animals or the environment, and provide these farmers with modest income. Unfortunately, many small farms are driven out of business by unregulated corporate buyouts. Visit the Organic Consumers Association for the latest news.
